Important Information from the School Meal Program:
FREE AND REDUCED MEALS
INFORMATION MESSAGE:
- The verification process for the School Meal Program 2025 that began in early October 2025 and was paused due to the government shutdown is being restarted in order to have it completed during or before the first week of February 2026.
- Impacted families are being notified as of 15 January to provide their documentation with a deadline of 21 January and provided our contact information for questions or concerns.
- Current eligibility statuses will remain unchanged throughout this new verification period.
- After the verification process is complete, an email detailing the outcome, including any changes to eligibilities will be sent.
- If eligibility status changes and results in a higher meal rate, families will receive a 10-day advance notice before any new charges are applied.
📢Attendance reminders:
- Students arriving after 0830, must be signed in at the front office by a parent or guardian, regardless of grade level. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us account for all students.
2. If your student(s) will be missing 3 or more days of school, they must complete an extended absence form. This can be picked up in the front office. Parents are to complete the top section and it is then given to administration for approval. Students then take the form to their teachers to receive the assignments they are missing while they are out. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Atkins-Hash at brian.atkinshash@dodea.edu.
Parents of Middle School Dragons,
AMHS is thrilled to announce that our school will host a special guest on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 – a best-selling author and former football journalist, Dan Freedman! Dan started as a football journalist working with the England World Cup team and interviewing the biggest names in international soccer – like Rooney, Beckham, Messi & Ronaldo! He then wrote an award-winning series of books for middle school students about a young football (soccer) star, Jamie Johnson, that was adapted for a television series for the BBC (available for FREE now on the BBC iplayer), as well as the young adult novel Unstoppable and 50 Ways Into Football. This is an incredible opportunity for our middle-school students to meet a writer whose work has inspired readers worldwide and to learn firsthand about the journey from sports journalism to becoming a celebrated author.
During the visit, the author will:
- Share insights about writing and storytelling
- Discuss experiences as a football journalist
- Answer student questions about books, sports, and careers in writing
This event is designed to spark creativity and encourage a love of reading and writing among our middle school students. Students can submit questions for Dan Freedman by using the form emailed to their school account. If their question is selected by a panel of MS teachers, that student will not only get to ask the question to Dan directly, but will also win a free signed copy of one of Dan’s books!
The AMHS library has purchased several copies of Dan’s books to help students prepare for Dan’s visit on 21 January. However, Dan also has a fantastic website filled with information on his books, his career as a football journalist, and a special service where you can order signed copies of his books to be delivered to your UK door within two weeks (just in time for the holidays – great gift idea!) https://www.danfreedman.co.uk/signed-books/
We look forward to an inspiring day! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ms. Berneau.

How Often Should Children Have a Comprehensive Eye Exam?
According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), children should have a comprehensive eye exam by an optometrist:
- At 6 months
- At age 3
- Before starting school (around age 5–6)
- Every 1–2 years thereafter, or annually if vision correction is needed.
Regular exams help detect conditions like amblyopia, myopia, and other vision issues early—critical for learning and development.

Caffeine & Teens: Safe Limits and Smarter Choices
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that teens ages 12–18 limit caffeine to under 100 mg per day and avoid energy drinks entirely because they often contain excessive caffeine and other stimulants that can harm sleep, heart health, and mood.
Instead of energy drinks, consider lower-caffeine alternatives like green tea or black tea, which provide hydration and antioxidants without the high stimulant load. Research suggests green tea catechins may support heart health and modestly improve cholesterol levels.

Smart Swaps for Teens: Help Your Teen Find Alternatives
Skip energy drinks – The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says they’re unsafe for teens.
- ✔️Choose lower-caffeine options – Try green tea (30 mg per cup) or black tea (45 mg per cup) instead of 200 mg energy drinks.
- ✔️Stay hydrated – Water and herbal teas (0 mg caffeine) are best for focus and health.
- ✔️Check labels together – Teach your teen to spot caffeine content.
