Alconbury middle school students host annual Literary Café for National Reading Month
ALCONBURY, United Kingdom — Middle school students at Alconbury Middle High School celebrated National Reading Month and Read Across America Day this March with their annual Literary Café, a student-centered event that brings books to life through creativity and collaboration.
Originally launched to encourage a love of reading and help students see themselves reflected in diverse stories, Read Across America continues to inspire schools in a variety of ways. At Alconbury Middle High School, the Literary Café has become a longstanding tradition, offering students a unique opportunity to showcase their learning through engaging, student-led presentations.
Organized by language arts teachers Mrs. Wilson and Ms. Patterson, the event emphasized student voice and ownership of learning. Every sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade student participated by presenting projects and sharing insights from their reading.
Presentations reflected a wide range of skills and creativity, including live readings that highlighted the impact of storytelling, digital presentations that demonstrated technical proficiency and project displays where students explained their thinking and responded to questions from peers and visitors.
The Literary Café continues to be a student favorite because it extends learning beyond traditional classroom assignments. By giving students the opportunity to share their work and engage with others, the event fosters confidence, communication skills and a deeper connection to reading.
Through events like the Literary Café, Alconbury Middle High School creates meaningful learning experiences that encourage students to take pride in their work while developing a lasting appreciation for literature.
