Alconbury Dragons Host Mini Cheer Camp to Inspire Young Students
ALCONBURY, United Kingdom — The Alconbury Dragons Varsity Cheer Team brought a touch of the Emerald City to Alconbury Middle High School during a colorful mini cheer camp that welcomed students in kindergarten through fifth grade for an afternoon of learning, movement and school spirit.
The three-hour camp filled the gym with pink and green as younger students learned cheers, motions, jumps and basic stunts from the varsity cheerleaders. The event served both as an introduction to cheerleading and as a fundraiser to support the Dragons’ upcoming trip to the European Championships.
Campers rotated through multiple activity stations, including pom-pom drills, cheer routines and a craft area where students created banners to show their Dragon pride. The theme, “One Short Day in the Emerald City,” added a playful element that helped make the experience memorable for participants.
Parents praised the camp for its organization and positive atmosphere.
“Aria had an absolute blast,” one parent said. “When I asked her favorite part, she said, ‘Literally all of it.’ She felt so special getting to learn from the older girls.”
Another parent said their daughter was eager to attend from the moment she saw the flyer. “She left camp even more excited about cheer. We’d sign up again in a heartbeat,” the parent said.
A third parent added, “Constance loved all the stations, and the shirts are just adorable.”
Leslie Atkins-Hash, athletic director and co-coach of the Dragons varsity cheer team, said the camp focused on confidence-building and connection.
“This camp was all about introducing young students to the spirit of cheer and giving them a chance to shine,” Atkins-Hash said. “Watching them learn from our cheerleaders and grow in confidence was incredible.”
The experience will continue beyond the camp. Participants have been invited to perform during halftime at the Alconbury basketball game on Jan. 10, giving them an opportunity to showcase their new skills in front of the school community.
For families who were unable to attend, the next Alconbury Dragons mini cheer camp is scheduled for Jan. 31.
